Overview

Mariner Studio is a professional maritime navigation and weather app for iOS and Android developed by Osprey Applications LLC. This privacy policy explains how the app handles your information.

Information We Collect

  • Route Data: GPS routes, waypoints, and navigation paths
  • App Settings: User preferences and customization
  • Photos: Images taken through the app camera, kept on your device (and, on iOS, in your own iCloud account if you sync)
  • Favorites: Saved stations, navigation units, and locations
  • Optional Feedback (Contact the Developer): When you choose to send us a message — general, feature request, or bug report — we receive the message text, your email address only if you enter one (optional for general messages; required for feature requests and bug reports so we can reply), and technical details that help us answer: app version, OS version, device model, language setting, which screen you sent it from, and whether you subscribe. Nothing is sent unless you tap Send.
  • Usage Analytics: Google Analytics for Firebase records how the app is used — for example screens viewed, onboarding steps, features used, maps and forecasts opened, favorites added or removed, routes created, upgrade screens shown, purchases started or completed, and messages sent to us. Some events include the name of a route, station, or favorite you created or viewed. Events are linked to a random app-instance identifier, not to your name or email.
  • Crash Reports: If the app crashes, Firebase Crashlytics sends the technical details of the crash, the device model, OS version, app version, free memory and disk space, a random installation identifier, and the app’s analytics events leading up to the crash.
  • Advertising ID (Android only): On Android, Google Analytics for Firebase may collect the Android advertising ID. We use it for analytics only — never for advertising — and you can reset or delete it at any time in Android Settings → Privacy → Ads. The iOS app does not collect Apple’s advertising identifier (IDFA).
  • Device Identification: Unique identifierForVendor on iOS (never transmitted)
  • Location Data: If you allow location access, the app uses your device’s precise GPS location to show your position on the map, find nearby stations, and get local forecasts and place names. To fetch that information, the app sends your coordinates with the request to the weather, tide, map, and place-name services listed under Third-Party Services. Your location is never sent to our own servers or to our analytics. Location access is optional; you can turn it off at any time in your device settings. Separately, Google Analytics derives an approximate, country- or city-level location from your IP address; Google does not provide us with your IP address.

How We Use Your Information

We do not use any of this information for advertising, and we do not sell it or share it with advertisers.

Data Storage & Cloud Sync

iOS/iCloud: CloudKit integration for cross-device syncing. Your synced data is stored in your personal iCloud account, subject to Apple's privacy framework.

Android: Local storage only. No cloud sync on Android.

Third-Party Services

  • Apple (CloudKit/StoreKit): Cloud sync and subscriptions. Synced preferences are encrypted.
  • NOAA and the National Weather Service: Tide, current, buoy, weather, radar, and chart data. When you ask for data near you, the app sends your coordinates with the request. We do not store these requests.
  • Open-Meteo: Local and marine weather forecasts. The app sends the coordinates of your location (or of the place you picked on the map) with the request. We do not store these requests.
  • Place names: To show the name of a location, the app sends its coordinates to OpenStreetMap’s Nominatim service (Android) or to Apple’s geocoding service (iOS).
  • Maps: Maps are displayed with Google Maps (Android) and Apple Maps (iOS), which receive the map areas you view under their own privacy policies.
  • U.S. Coast Guard and NGA: Navigation notices and reference data. These downloads do not include your location or other personal information.
  • RevenueCat: Subscription management. Payment info handled by platform.
  • Google Firebase (Analytics and Crashlytics): Usage analytics and crash reports, processed by Google on our behalf under the Firebase privacy and security terms. Analytics data is kept for up to 14 months and crash reports for 90 days, then deleted automatically.
  • Supabase: Hosts our feedback database, where messages you send through Contact the Developer are stored. Messages are read only by us and kept until we have dealt with them or you ask us to delete them. Supabase also serves the public route catalog; downloading routes sends no personal information.

Data Sharing

We do not sell, trade, or otherwise transfer your personal information to third parties.

Data Security

  • On-device encryption for sensitive fields
  • HTTPS for all API communications, analytics, crash reports, and messages to us
  • No name, email address, or message text transmitted to analytics services
  • Our feedback database accepts new messages from the app but does not let the app read them back

Your Privacy Rights

  • Uninstall the app to remove all local data
  • Manage iCloud settings to control synced data retention
  • Request deletion by emailing [email protected]
  • RevenueCat data deletion within 30 days
  • To delete a message you sent through Contact the Developer (including any email address you gave), email us with the subject line “Data Deletion Request” from the address you gave in your message; for an anonymous message, tell us roughly when you sent it and what it said. We delete it within 30 days.
  • Usage analytics and crash reports are linked only to random identifiers, not your name or email, so we cannot look them up for one person; they are deleted automatically (14 months and 90 days). Reinstalling the app starts a new identifier, and on Android you can reset the advertising ID in Settings → Privacy → Ads.

Children's Privacy

The app is not intended for children under 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information from minors.

International Users

We comply with GDPR for EU/UK users. You have the right to access, rectification, and deletion. Contact [email protected] for requests.

Changes to This Policy

We may update this privacy policy from time to time. Any changes will be reflected on this page with an updated revision date.
